About Dr Deon Engela

Dr Engela received his MBChB qualifications from Pretoria University in 1985 and then did his Specialist training at the University of Cape Town where he qualified as an Orthopaedic Surgeon, in 1993.  He was awarded the Eidelstein Medal by the College of Surgeons of South Africa for best Orthopaedic candidate FCS (SA) ORTH in South Africa in 1993.

Dr Engela did a Hip and Knee replacement fellowship in the United Kingdom for one year (1993) after qualification. He was then appointed as an Orthopaedic Consultant in the Joint Replacement Unit (1994) in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he practiced as a consultant doing mainly hip replacements, knee replacements and research. He returned to South Africa in 1995 where he started his private practice at Constantiaberg Mediclinic. He was a part time consultant at the Princess Alice Arthritis Unit from 1995 - 2002 and the Hand Clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital from 1995 - 1999.  He also served on the South African Orthopaedic Association Executive Committee from 2005 – 2007.

Dr Engela is a founding member of both the Constantia Joint Replacement Unit and the Constantia Hand Clinic at Constantiaberg Mediclinc.

Together with Dr Nick Martin, Dr Engela established the Joint Care Trust to assist with the arthroplasty backlog in state hospitals in the Western Cape. The Joint Care Trust is a registered non-profit organisation established in 2012, with the aim to provide hip and knee replacements at no cost to state patients. This is done with donations and funding from private companies and implant donations from implant companies. The surgery is done at no cost by all participating surgeons. More than 350 replacements have been done and assisted in training nurses and surgical staff at two government hospitals in the Western Cape.

He is a keen mountain biker and enjoys time spent in the mountain with a particular interest in the fynbos vegetation. He has an interest in art and dabbles in oil painting and sculpture.
